My guess to that is that English being “the main language of the movies” they probably don’t make a lot of effort, even the actors who dub suck. I noticed that English dubbing usually sucks- I understand 5 languages and when I checked English dubs they were pretty bad. Dub has to match the onscreen actors that’s true but a lot depends on the quality of dub. You also have to condense the dialogue into subtitles that are not too long (so that people could read them fast and comfortably and so that they didn’t block half the screen and moved with the scene) so many times I noticed that subs were more condensed than dub. Source: I wrote both, subs and dubs, for a living for a while. Since those 2 also often are done by different companies, but at least different teams, they can vary extremely. Dubbed, which you can listen to, and subbed, which SHOULD actually be the better translation. This way you get two quite different versions. Also, sometimes you would need far more syllables to convey the original meaning, but you can't just speed up the spoken words, I mean imagine someone saying 2 words in the original and you try to speed a 5-word-sentence in there. Only limiting factor here is reading speed (again with the darn German, which often is longer than English), so sometimes you need to shorten a bit.ĭubs, in addition, have the whole phonetic thing to take into account too, so the dub does not feel too weird. Subtitles try to follow the original in meaning as close as they can. Now imagine someone yelling after their mom for a few times ) Now say "mom" and "Mama" and watch what position your mouth ends up in. Take the word "mom" for example, which I would translate to "Mama" in German. Not so much purpose, but indeed, the dub needs to match the lip movement as close as possible.
